His parents divorced when he was young. He was passed between relatives as a child, and didn't have a strong relationship with his father, who played guitar in clubs at that time. When he was fourteen, a friend showed him a guitar. Corgan was quickly entranced by the insturment, and though he hadn't been musically encouraged as a child, he practiced on a guitar daily for most of his teenage years. Fast forward to 1987. Corgan working in a used record store, is 20 years old. He had by then played in a band called The Marked (formed in 1985), named so because Corgan and another band member had birthmarks on their arms. Anyway, 20-year-old Billy met a 19-year old lad, James Iha. They formed a friendship and a band that would become one of the most wildly successful of all time: the Smashing Pumpkins. Practice and song writing led Iha and Corgan to their first gig at a club called Track--a polish club, that is. The duo were talented, but limited by their lack of insturments. THey were using a drum machine at the time. Outside of a club, Billy got into an aruguement with a nineteen year old, D'Arcy Wretsky, over an eighties band. Talking to her, he discovered she played base and gave her his phone number. She called, and the Smashing Pumpkins soon had a third member. Some gigs later, the Pumpkins realized that they needed a drummer; the drum machine was characteristically limited. Someone told them about a young jazz drummer named JImmy Chamberlain. They contacted Chamberlain, and he too soon joined the band. Maybe I'm going off the topic here. All this really was supposed to be was a bio of Billy, and I'm going into the history of the band. Alright, to make a really, REALLY long story short, the Pumpkins "severed" their relationship with Chamberlain due to his involvement with drugs and are now back to being a three-person group. They used a variety of drummers on Adore. Why do I continue writing this? it's weird, really, because I have a lot to say but not a very creative way to say it. Billy's Favorite movies are: 8 1/2 and Citizen Kane Why am I writing this? What in me decided it was neccessary to devote an entire site to Billy? it's just because the smashing pumpkin's music has helped me through a really difficult period of my life and I continue to enjoy it. If you listen to the lyrics that he sings and writes so passionately, hear the desperation and passion in his voice, perhaps you'll understand. And then again, perhaps not. |
